An afternoon in Lerici

We're having a bit of a problem with a slow internet connection in the apartment, so I'm starting this from scratch.
We spent yesterday morning strolling around the main square of La Spezia and headed down to the wharf to see if we could buy a day pass on the ferry to Cinque Terre. However, we'd left it a bit late so we had a change of plans! We decided to walk back up to the tourist info centre to see if 1. there was an afternoon trip we could take and 2. If there were any public toilets around. There seems to be a genuine lack of these in Europe! These are the times when I wish my bladder was big!! She helped out with the toilets and also suggested Lerici or Porto Venere as nice places to visit. On our way to the toilet we discovered fantastic undercover markets which are apparently open every day. There was a whole section devoted to seafood which Claudia drooled over!!
After this and the toilet stop we decided to catch the bus to Lerici and guess what? We arrived without incident!! It is a lovely seaside village with colourful houses and a great castle which dates back to 1100. Pizza for lunch (yes a whole one each!!) and then we wandered around Lerici. We walked up the many steps to see inside the castle, only to discover that it wasn't open! Ah well, we wouldn't be in Italy if there weren't stairs. We climb 155 just to get to our apartment from the street!
We walked along the promenade from Lerici to San Terenzo and caught the bus home. We were all carbed out so bought a salad for dinner along with the necessary gelato! We now confess that we didn't have the salad, just the gelato.
